Local events sponsored and sometimes facilitated by the museum and volunteers include:

2018

  • SUMMER 2018 Events:
    • June 23: Pet Rocks - Children are given a rock to transform into their pet by painting a face, adding eyes, adding hair, and then taking them home. A smock or old shirt is suggested to prevent good clothes from getting damaged. Free no age limit, only 20 spots available. Please phone the museum at 250-774-3536 after June 1st to reserve your child's spot. Subject to weather.
    • July 15th: Sidewalk Chalk Extravaganza at the Museum - [This is a tentative date. Please phone the museum to confirm date and time.] - Children decorate the pathway in front of the museum in a design of their choice. Free, no age limit, subject to weather.
    • August 11th: Teen Night at the Museum, ages 13 to 16 year olds. Tour the museum in the dark with only a flashlight, followed by a movie showing of "Night at the Museum" where popcorn and soft drinks will be served. $5.00 entry fee, only 15 spots available. Please phone the museum at 250-774-3536 after August 1 to reserve your teens spot.
    • August 19th: Animal Tracks - Children tour the wildlife displays in the museum, a guessing game is played and then get messy by painting their own animal tracks. A smock or old shirt is suggested to prevent good clothes from getting damaged. Free, no age limit, only 20 spots available. Please phone the museum at 250-774-3536 after August 1 to reserve your child's spot 250-774-3536. Subject to weather.
  • Weekly Events - Hosting the "Welcome Visitor Program" every Tuesday at 07:00pm from June until the end of August in the church at the museum. Admission is FREE!
  • Weekly Garage Sale happens every Saturday from mid June to mid September, 09:00am to 12:00 Noon (follow the signs)
  • Annual Vintage Car Show & Shine on Saturday, June 23rd 2018 from 10:00am to 03:00pm. There will be food & drinks, prizes, door prizes and a 50/50 draw. Please contact the museum for more information.
  • Dog Sled Races - approximately first week of January every year from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
  • Heritage Days at the museum - for 2018 will be held on February 24th and 25th:
    • Come for the entertainment, the working displays, and the bannock;
    • ...admission is FREE to the museum grounds. Enjoy some bannock (click on the link for our complimentary recipe). For more information regarding bannock in our North American culture, please visit the website celebrating Bannock Awareness published on an old BC Ministry of Forests & Range webpage - which was still available in early 2018.
  • Annual Fort Nelson Trappers Rendezvous celebration - for 2018 will be held from Friday, March 2nd to Sunday, March 4th. Watch for events at the museum and around town.
    • Trappers Rendezvous Dog Pull is taking place on the museum grounds Saturday, March 3rd @ 11:00am. Registration takes place on the same day at the Fort Nelson Recreation Centre starting @ 9:00am. The Recreation Centre is located a little to the east of the Museum at the intersection of 50th Avenue North (parallel and adjacent to the Alaska Highway) and Simpson Trail.
  • Canada Day Parade (annually on July 1st). The museum contributes antique and heritage vehicles to the parade event along 50th Avenue North - the North frontage road paralleling the Alaska Hwy.
  • Fort Nelson Historical Society

Other Annual Events

  • Monthly Moonlight Cross-Country Ski events at the Fort Nelson Recreation Forest (aka Community Forest). Usually scheduled the Saturday on or before the full moon.
